Laissez les Bons-Temps Rouler

I looked at the calendar today and realized it was Mardi Gras! Not even the Celebrations Around the World notice board at school picked up on that - all it had for today was Peace Corps Day. I'll bet things are rather subdued in New Orleans this year, though . . . for all the reputed debauchery in the French Quarter, Mardi Gras is actually quite a nice family-oriented holiday once you get out into the suburbs. It's one of the things I miss about living in Louisiana. *sigh*

Um . . . Charles, you're absolutely right. I should've gotten my hands a calendar to get the exact date for Mardi Gras before posting - this post will forever stand as a monument to the importance of double-checking.

But seriously, I don't get why Mardi Gras was last week. Mardi Gras is the last day before Lent, which is forty days long and ends with Easter. The way I calculated the Mardi Gras date was by checking the date for Easter and subtracting forty. Easter is April 16 - subtracting 16 gets us to March 31, and subtracting the remaining 24 puts us smack on March 7. For a February 28 Mardi Gras, Lent has to be 47 days long. Can somebody enlighten me?

And yes, Henrik, Iko Iko does appear to be a big Mardi Gras song - most of the Mardi Gras music compilations on Amazon.com appear to include it. I'll have to look into this . . .
